Why a Time Sert kit is needed to install inserts

Why a Time Sert kit is needed to install inserts

Years ago, I wrote about a customer who only wanted the tap from a TIME-SERT 2200 kit. More recently, another customer asked, “Can I buy just the thread tap from the TIME-SERT 3700 kit?” These types of inquiries are common. The TIME-SERT 3700 kit, an M11x2.0 Universal Head Bolt Thread Kit, is popular for many LS engines. When I asked if the customer had the full kit, he assured me he did, but his answers suggested otherwise. He claimed the kit was old and the numbers on the tap were worn off. This misunderstanding highlights why all tools in a TIME-SERT kit are essential for proper insert installation.

When I explained that the tap alone could cost $150-$200, the customer was shocked. I further clarified that individual components are more expensive when sold separately compared to buying the complete kit. High-quality, USA-made tools like these come at a premium but deliver unmatched precision and durability. Ultimately, it became clear that the customer didn’t have the kit and didn’t understand why the other tools are vital for a successful repair. At Wise Auto Tools, we prioritize our customers’ success, even if it means turning down a sale.

Below is a breakdown of the primary components in a TIME-SERT Universal Head Bolt Kit and their crucial roles. Always refer to the kit’s step-by-step instructions for detailed guidance.

Drill Fixture

The drill fixture is a large metal plate with precisely located holes. It bolts to the engine block using existing head bolt threads that are still intact. Before fully tightening the bolts, a line-up bushing is inserted into the drill fixture to guide the core drill. This ensures the drilled hole remains perfectly straight.

Skipping the drill fixture risks creating uneven threads, leading to improper clamping forces. This can result in a misaligned cylinder head, uneven pressure distribution, or leaks in compression, coolant, or oil. Crooked thread repairs compromise the integrity of the threads, placing undue stress on one side of the hole. Despite claims like, “I can drill straight,” using the drill fixture eliminates guesswork and guarantees precision.

Core Drill

The core drill is a specialized bit that functions as both a reamer and a step drill, creating a slight recess for the top of the insert. This process ensures the hole is properly sized and smooth, which is critical for:

  • Thread Engagement: A precise, cylindrical hole allows the tap to cut clean threads without obstruction.
  • Thread Alignment: Properly aligned holes ensure the tap follows the correct axis, producing accurate threads.
  • Thread Quality: Smooth holes allow for even material removal, resulting in high-quality threads.
  • Tap Longevity: Using a smooth hole reduces stress on the tap, extending its lifespan and efficiency.

Without the core drill, holes may have irregularities that interfere with tapping and compromise thread quality.

Thread Tap

The M11x2.0 tap included in the TIME-SERT 3700 kit is specifically designed for the outer diameter (OD) of the insert, not the internal threads. Unlike taps from standard tap-and-die sets, this tap ensures compatibility with the TIME-SERT system.

  • Thread Preparation: Cleans out debris, corrosion, or obstructions to ensure a proper fit for the insert.
  • Thread Alignment: Ensures threads are correctly aligned, preventing cross-threading or misalignment.
  • Insert Compatibility: Matches the specifications of the TIME-SERT insert, ensuring a secure repair.

Using the correct tap is crucial for preparing the hole to accept the insert and ensuring a successful repair.

Thread Insert

TIME-SERT inserts are engineered to restore damaged threads with unmatched precision and durability. Key features include:

  • Thread Restoration: Replaces damaged threads by cutting new ones and providing a solid foundation for the insert.
  • Thin-Walled Design: The synchronized internal and external threads allow installation in areas with limited space.
  • Durable Repair: Creates strong, reliable threads that can withstand stress and vibration.

Installation Driver

The installation driver is an indispensable tool that expands the bottom threads of the insert, locking it into place. This cold-rolling process ensures:

  • Secure Locking: The expanded threads create a tight fit between the insert and the base material.
  • Durability: Prevents the insert from loosening under stress or vibration.
  • Enhanced Thread Engagement: Cold rolling improves thread integrity and ensures a long-lasting repair.

One customer suggested cutting off the bottom of the insert instead of using the driver. This would sabotage the repair, as it removes the locking mechanism critical to the insert’s performance. If you’re investing time and money into a repair, using the correct tools ensures a successful outcome.
