Time Sert Question - What if Time Sert doesn't offer a short enough insert for the hole being repaired?
WiseAutoTools.com Summary: The article discusses the problem of repairing a hole that is shallower than the shortest available insert, and how to solve this issue with Time-Sert.
In certain cases, repairing a hole can be problematic if the hole being repaired has a depth shorter than the length of the shortest insert available. However, this is a rare issue with Time Sert as they offer a wide range of insert lengths. Nonetheless, there are situations where the shortest insert is not suitable for a particular application. For example, trying to repair a 5/16-18 hole with a depth of .250 inches when the shortest length insert available is .350 inches.
In such cases, it is possible to install a Time-Sert without using a counterbore. This involves leaving the shoulder sticking up, which can be removed later on by milling or filing. To achieve this, follow these steps:
- Drill the hole to the required size.
- Tap the hole.
- Screw the insert into the hole with loctite to the desired location.
- Allow the insert to set up with the loctite before running the insert driver tool through the insert. This will prevent the insert from going too deep into the prepared hole.
- Use the driver tool to expand the last few threads of the insert.
- File down or mill the top of the insert to get it flush with the surface. It is recommended to run the insert driver back through the insert to clean any burrs at the top of the insert.
It is important to note that Time-Sert recommends trying to find an insert that is the correct length before attempting this type of installation.
Overall, while repairing a hole that is shorter than the length of the shortest insert available can be challenging, it is possible to work around the issue with a little bit of creativity and careful installation techniques. For situations where custom inserts are needed for a quantity of 1,000 or more contact us for a custom quote. There is a MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity) of 1,000 for custom lengths to be made. Otherwise use the procedure outlined in the above article.
